Houseboats are not generally considered to be handicap-friendly. We're here to tell you, that's not the case. In fact, many houseboats have handicapped accessible features for disabled guests. Where houseboat sizes and personal abilities vary, we will do our best to find something that may work for you.
As most houseboats vary in width from 14-18 feet, the hallways are often not wide enough to accommodate a standard wheelchair. Also, many houseboats have a few steps up or down to access private sleeping areas, but there is typically a pull-out bed option in the main room for those who have difficulty using stairs.
Some houseboat models are especially made with handicap accessible and safety features such as ramps, elevators to the top deck, wider hallways, stability handles, and roll in showers. The 50' XT, 60' Eagle and the 70' Titanium houseboats (available at several locations) are generally a couple of feet wider which allow for wider hallways. The 59' Discovery XL Platinum and the 53' Adventurer houseboats at Lake Powell are available upon request in a "Universal" model which offer a modified floorplan to accommodate guests with disabilities. Some of the best of our handicap accessible houseboats are the 75' Xtreme and the 75' Platinum houseboats that depart from Antelope Point marina at Lake Powell. The 75' Xtreme houseboat has a wide patio door with ramps, bathroom grab bars, wide hallway and a full bath with low threshold shower, and the 75' Platinum houseboat is equipped with the above features of the 75' Xtreme plus a wheelchair lift to the top deck, and another lift in a bedroom.
Everyone's abilities vary, so please call if you have any questions or concerns about a particular boat or location. We will do our best to find something that will work for you and everyone in your group.
