Just off the southern west coast of the Sunshine State lies the Sanibel and Captiva Islands. As you approach these islands from the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River, you'll be greeted with picture perfect scenery. Miles of white sanded shores lined with tropical foliage reach out into the Gulf of Mexico's clear blue waters. Here you'll find plenty of pristine beaches like Turner Beach on Captiva Island or Bowman's Beach on Sanibel, all prime for an evening stroll along side the lowering tide as you watch the sunset.
Once you've chosen your beach of the day, anchor to the shore to start exploring. Take out the 2 person kayak you're provided with your houseboat for a low key cruise, snorkel the reefs, or try out parasailing. Dry off on land at the Cayo Costa State Park, which offers over 6 miles of hiking and biking trails. Finish off your active day on the relaxing nature trails of the Cabbage Key's, strolling among some of Florida's most idyllic natural beauty.
On a calm day, take to the water for some prime salt water fishing. Keep it simple and cast from shore or take a day trip to Tarpon Bay. All year long you'll find a wide variety of fish: snook, redfish, sea trout, Spanish mackerel, snappers, and groupers to name a few. Make it official and pick up a license at the marina before your departure. Whether basking in the sun or swimming in the warm waves, keep your eyes peeled during the day for the water's wildlife: bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, and manatees are frequent visitors. But don't forget to look up; these islands are well known for their diverse feathered friends. Hawks, eagles, osprey, pelicans, flamingos, egrets, herons, ibis, and roseate spoonbills are spotted often. To view even more wildlife, be sure to stop by the J.D. Darling National Wildlife Refuge: home to 238 bird species, 50 types of reptiles, and 32 mammals. This refuge sports an assortment of bird watching spots, walking and biking paths, canoe trails, and scenic drives.
