The Florida Keys are a string of islands off the southern coast of Florida. This island destination is the perfect getaway year round. A short mile off of Marathon Key (mid-Keys) sits your very own private island with the 38' Houseboat that sleeps 6 with 1 private stateroom, 1 lower berth, and double futon. The houseboat stays docked at the island for the week, but a 17' Triumph Motor Boat is included with your reservation for you to explore with, as are 3 kayaks, 2 paddleboards, and fishing/snorkel gear. The private island is equipped with a firepit, tiki torches, two outdoor structures with hammocks and a picnic table, gas grill, and lounge chairs.

Fishing

Fishing in the Keys is a unique experience with a diverse cast of catches:

  • Tarpon is plentiful. The west end of Seven Mile Bridge and Bahia Honda Bridge are well-known areas. The best time for Tarpon is March-August.
  • Offshore catches like Sailfish are best caught November-May, and Dolphin Fish (Mahi-Mahi) from April-October.
  • The Marathon West Hump rises from depths of 1,100 feet to 480 feet, great for catching gamefish like Marlin from April-October, and Blackfin Tuna year round.
  • Fish the reefs and wrecks for Yellowtail/Snapper which are great catches year round, Grouper is best between May-December, and Mackerel from November-April.

It's recommended to hire the services of a local licensed guide: https://fla-keys.com/marathon/fishing/

Or, drop a line off the houseboat or the island dock.

Another sport altogether is catching Lobster.

Lobster season is August 6 - March 31st.

There's a two day "Lobster Mini" that takes place the last Wednesday and Thursday of July each year that's open to recreational harvesters.

Commercial lobstermen begin setting their traps on August 1st for the opening of regular lobster season on August 6th.
