Did you know that over 38 films have featured the Lake Powell area as a backdrop? Including both the 1967 and 2001 versions of Planet of the Apes where, in the 1967 version, Lake Powell served as the space ship's landing area. Many scenes were also shot in desert areas and along the shoreline in both versions.
Lake Powell's fame on film began with1924's Deadwood Coach and has been a favorite area for filmmakers ever since. Because of it's protected landscapes and secluded areas, the ease and beauty of the Lake Powell area are ideal for shooting.

Broken Arrow was released in 1993. The movie included a scene where John Travolta's character was involved in a shoot out, which is now the site of Amangiri Resort.
Also released in 1993, Maverick, starring Jodie Foster, was filmed around Warm Creek Bay
John Carter of Mars (2012) featured Lake Powell's canyons as "Mars" and the water as "River Iss."
Gravity was likely the most recent, just released in 2013, which starred Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
One of the few land scenes was filmed near Padre Butte and Face Canyon, but was hardly recognized due to computer generated greenery seen in the film.

Lake Powell has been seen in movies varying from big blockbuster hits to not so well known flops, but there's just something about this area that's completely magical. Whether you are able to explore these areas in person or can only visit by pressing play, there is much adventure to be had.
