See the Illinois River Valley Like You’ve Never Seen it Before:

From the moment they arrive at the Starved Rock Marina, houseboat renters will have no doubts as to why their pickup location is also Illinois’ #1 attraction! Starved Rock State Park has beautiful cliffs overlooking the Illinois River and 18 canyons to explore deep into the park, some that house tucked away waterfalls, plenty of greenery and a world of wildlife. The park serves as the springboard to a vacation filled with nature and a variety of explorations along the way. You and your houseboat have approximately 80 navigable miles to explore southwest of the marina to Henry , Illinois, and east of the marina to Dresden Lock, near Morris, Illinois.

Some renters may wish to spend the bulk of their vacation in the vicinity, docking their houseboat at the marina and doing day hikes and nature watching. I can’t say I blame them at all! With river otters alone I could watch for hours! But there are also beavers, deer, coyotes, turtles, snakes, frogs, and a variety of colorful bird watching that might also include spotting a Bald Eagle!

Fishing is popular on the Illinois River and the various lakes that are formed in the river valley. There are numerous tournaments each year for species including Walleye, White Bass, Sauger, Catfish and more. Waterfowl are also prevalent there, a museum devoted to the famous decoy carvers Charles and Edna Perdew can be found in the town of Henry.

Water sports like tubing, skiing, and wakeboarding can be enjoyed in certain areas somewhat away from the main river channel. The marina rents the necessary equipment and they have a small store for any last-minute needs.

You are free to beach your houseboat at the marina’s private island or to anchor in the main channel for the optimal nature escape. Due to currents, this is the only place safe for swimming in the river. Other marinas along the river may offer docking and some require reservations and charge an overnight fee.

Wherever you choose to spend your time, you’ll be sure to have an experience like no other!
