Shell Key
Once you arrive on the northwest side of Islamorada, search for the route that guides you into the middle of the key. Find the natural tunnel beneath the mangrove canopies that opens up into a sheltered pool. Draw near quietly, as to enjoy an undisturbed view of the local feathered friends – such as herons and pelicans - you’ll likely find resting here.
Cotton Key
Lying right off of the northeastern top of Upper Matecumbe Key, the Cotton Key serves as a dwelling for an array of birds. A collection of small mangrove islands are claimed nesting areas for several different species while the key’s shallow flats are often used by birds passing through – as well as the commonly seen bonefish.
Lignumvitae Key & State Park
Lush tropical hardwood hammocks dominate this forested key. Reachable only by private or tour boat, this tiny island was purchased in 1919 by William J. Matheson, a wealthy chemist from Miami. The small home he built – equipped with a windmill to provide power – has since been renovated and serves as the visitor’s center. Stop by for a ranger guided tour, which are given twice a day Friday through Sunday.
East Key
Spend time cruising the East Key to enjoy what the Florida Keys are known for – the crystal clear, turquoise waters. Spend your days snorkeling the reefs, fishing for your next meal, kayaking throughout the islands or napping on the white sanded beaches in the sun.
